Bringing Youth Together to Talk Life and Education

"Saying It Together", an Artwell associated program of Shunpike project funded by a generous grant from the Seattle Peoples Fund, brought together kids in alternative school settings with kids in regular high school classrooms for respectful candid dialogue exploring the places where life intersects with education (or not). The discussions were led by Margaret Balderama SPS social worker. The material that came out of these conversations became the inspiration for self-portraits expressing the unique character of each person, while demonstrating the power of community that happens when they come together as one unit. The art activity was led by Kathleen McHugh. "Saying It Together" took place at Southwest Youth and Family Services at scheduled times during the Young Writers Workshop facilitated by SWYFS teaching staff. The art was displayed at the Young Writers Poetry Workshop at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center on August 7, 2013
